Advocacy
How can I advocate for autistic children?

Donate and Volunteer
One reputable charity that supports autistic children and adults alike is the Autism Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). This foundation is run by autistic people who represent their community when laws and policies are passed that affect them. They encourage other autistic people to advocate for themselves. This is one of many good charities that give a voice to autistic children, and you may want to do your research on them before donating or volunteering at an organization. You can find more about ASAN on their website. Click the ASAN logo to be directed there.

Recognize Abuse
You can help an abused autistic child by recognizing when this mistreatment is occurring and reporting it. A child with autism who is being abused may develop unexplained bruises, lose weight, become more sensitive, appear anxious, or grow quiet. This does not apply to every child because trauma affects autistic children in many ways. If you suspect a child is being mistreated or abused, click the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children logo to be directed to their website or contact their tipline at 800-843-5678.
